I am excited to become a teacher because I am excited to be able to teach something that I am passionate about and hopefully be a good part of someone’s day. In my teacher interview, one of my teachers made a point that when you are excited about something it is hard for others not to be excited too. This has stuck with me and is something that I hope to demonstrate while teaching. Science is something that I have always been interested in and I am excited to be able to teach it to others and share my enthusiasm on it, even though I know not everyone is going to share that excitement. Further, for some students school is their safe place rather than a home and in this case, the teacher has a great impact on whether they feel comfortable at school. As a teacher, I hope to make a positive impact in a students day and be part of the reason why someone had a good day instead of being the reason for their bad day. I don’t want to make it sound like I expect all students to like being in my classroom all the time because I don’t. I know that it is going to be a challenge but it is a challenge that I am excited to take on.
On the other hand, I am nervous about teaching because I am worried that I will not have good leadership skills and will struggle with classroom management. No matter what classroom I end up in, I know that there will always be some sort of struggle with classroom management and behavioral issues and I am nervous that there will be situations that I don’t know how to handle. I am hoping that experiences throughout college can help me to build better tools than I currently have so that I am more confident in my abilities. Along with that, I also need to improve my leadership skills. During high school, I only had a few opportunities to be a leader and I felt uncomfortable in the role. As I go through college, I have been trying to find opportunities that can push me out of my comfort zone and help me develop better leadership skills from different angles. However, with where I am currently at, leadership and classroom management are two things that I am nervous about handling.
